How to Host Your Backyard Bible Study: 6 Easy Tips

Finding a Bible Study that fits a busy mama's schedule is hard! Add to that the homework and the pressure to be there every week. Sometimes, it just feels like more work than it's worth.

But let me say this: There's an enemy who doesn't want you in God's word and fellowship with other believers, especially mamas. Why? We have been chosen to raise the next generation to love the Lord and proclaim his name. We are nurturing and equipping world hope-givers! Take away the mom's spiritual growth, and you stunt the whole family. The enemy is no fool, but we aren't fools either!

Let me encourage you: if you don't have a Bible study group that fits your schedule or style, START ONE! I started my Backyard Bible study in 2021, and it's been one of the biggest blessings of my life. It has ebbed and flowed throughout the years, but here are the principles that stuck:

HOST AT HOME

OPEN YOUR HOME! Even if you think it's too small or not "nice enough" (this tripped me up for a long time!). But then God reminded me: This house isn't mine. Every good gift comes from above, and he wants us to use all of them to honor him.

THE BACKYARD.

Let's talk about the real reason: I don't have to clean my house like a maniac the night of Bible study! I have four kids, and I'm just not going to do it. This way, I just have to make sure the bathroom is acceptable. Yay!

START SMALL & STAY SMALL!

You may be tempted to invite everyone on your contact list- don't. Take the time to pray, asking God who he'd like you to invite. Keeping it small creates a safe space for people to share and study.

NO HOMEWORK

I have been a part of A LOT of Bible studies. Some women don't return to even the most fantastic Bible studies because they didn't finish their "homework." The pressure and expectation, especially for busy moms, to add one more thing to their list feels heavy. I want to create a space where women just come, open their Bible, and read together. Keep. It. Simple. I doubt the early church had "homework." The Bereans were commended because they came together and "searched the Scriptures day after day." I can't tell you how much power there is just reading God's word together. Please hear me; Bible studies and homework are not bad! They are powerful and some of the best studies I've ever done. It's just not the model I wanted in my home for this season of life.

NO STRUCTURE

Okay, my Type A friends, don't freak! I understand that saying "no structure" stresses some of you out! The heart behind this principle is to remain open-handed to what the Holy Spirit wants to do in your study. If someone has a question about the scripture and you don't have an answer- stop and find the answer together! Open up the Blue Letter Bible app (link at end of article), have commentaries on hand, and study the root of Greek and Hebrew words. It took my BYBS two years to finish the book of Matthew! Two years. We allowed the Holy Spirit to take us on detours, to move us to search and ask questions. It's hands down my favorite way to study the Bible!

NO JUDGEMENT

If someone can't make it—it's okay! We technically have thirteen people in our Bible study, but only eight usually make it on a night. Because guess what? Kids get sick, sports schedules change, husbands need attention, and sometimes moms need a minute. Don't take it personally, and don't say anything that would make them feel guilty for not making it. Remember, you're offering your home to these women because you love them. So, make sure you do just that.

Resources for starting your own Backyard Bible Study:

The Blue Letter Bible App:

It's fantastic! You can click on any word in the Bible and learn its meaning in its original language. Plus, it has extensive commentaries and study tools at your fingertips! Have everyone download this app before you start!

Study Bible:

I can't say enough about owning a study Bible. It's worth the investment, and there are lots to choose from!

The Bible Background Commentary by Craig S. Keener.:

A game changer if you want to add richness to your study! This book provides crucial cultural background to every verse you read! It's super easy to use and understand. Have this sitting on the table while you study and enjoy!

To make things extra special:

Prayer Journals:

I always give my friends a new prayer journal at the beginning of the year. I create a cute design with the name of the book we're studying on Canva, print it on sticker paper, and place it on the cover.

Electric Tea Kettle:

Make it easy on yourself! You'll have hot water ready for tea or cocoa super quick!

Delicious Teas:

These are the fan favorites at my house. They are affordable, yummy, and couldn't come in a prettier tin! There are lots of flavors to choose from, too! (also found at Target).

Tea lights, Mason Jars, and flowers:

Mason jars are so fun! Put tea lights in half and fresh flowers in the other. Boom, a simple yet beautiful table!

Wooden Trays:

Hit Homegoods and grab a couple of wooden trays for goodies. I use the same ones every week, and they go with everything.

Bluetooth speaker:

I made a BYBS playlist on Spotify just for our group. I always have it on low, playing in the background. There is something holy about hearing worship music as you read God's word.

My fav isn't cheap but sounds lovely outside.

I pray this inspires you to start your own BYBS! Please write to me if you start one and let me know how it goes. I would love to support you in prayer!
